More about Beecholme

Beecholme is also the first postwar "mixed development" housing scheme in Hackney, with a mixture of houses and flats with the taller block having five storeys and containing one-bedroom and bedsit accommodation. It is featured in Volume 15 of Hackney History and was the site of Beecholme House, the family home of Maj. John André (d. 1780), who was executed as a British spy in the American War of Independence.

New flooring for concrete entrances & stairwells?

One possible use for the EIB is covering the bare concrete stairwells throughout the estate.
Since the installation of the entrance security doors has made the stairwells "indoor" they really do need updating as well.

Using the EIB would mean doing the stairwell over a period even with match funding so i am also applying for a lottery grant under the "Reaching Communities" fund.

Hammersmith & Fulham recently upgraded their "Riverside Gardens" estate flooring in all it's communal walkways and stairwells using Altro's Mondofutura flooring. It starts at £12.80/square meter compared to over £18/ squ m. for most others with very similar specs and lifetime!
Here is Altro's link to Mondofutura:

here's an example of Mondofutura:

I'm also in the process of getting quotes from Burmatex & Polyflor. As the 7 stairwells in the 2 storey blocks have little traffic we'll also be considering (& getting quotes for) a suitable carpet - more in keeping with internal stairs.

UPDATE to TALL BLOCK LIFT LOBBY RE-DECORATION
(see last post below)
It may be possible for the bare brick wall to be plastered and the myriad cables and pipes to be boxed and then painted from the "Eyesore Budget" rather than from either the EIB or mix of EIB & Decoration Budget.
Enquiries are underway and Gary Lane of Hackney Homes should get back to me before the upcoming TRA meeting.

I'll keep you up to date with proceedings.

Jan Enhanced TRA meeting

I hope everyone got off to a good start this year!
Best wishes for the future.

Our next Tenants & Residents Assoc. meeting is an "Enhanced" one. That is, one where our estate manager will be attending to take down notes of any work we want done or any actions taken. They then go on to the computer program "RESPOND" to enable fast & accurate follow-up.

Click on the poster below to see it full size.

At the meeting we will be concidering projects for the EIB (Environmental Improvement Budget) which has to be settled within the next few weeks.
I've proposed using some of the EIB along with match funding from the decorating budget to bring the ground floor lift lobby in the tall block up to spec.
That means plastering the bare brick wall, boxing in the myriad cables and pipes and then painting.
At one time the lobby was outdoors, but since the security entrances it has been indoors.
As it is the main entrance for virtually all the towers residents - some 1/3 of all residents it is an area of some importance.

Another pet project of mine is signage.
Both Linda Kelly and Susmita have, in principal agreed that our signs could be improved.
In the first instance I'm hoping to get the sign on the lower parking area gate changed.
I've already spoken to Gary Lane who has taken over from Mike Emmett as head of works. He suggested it could easily been done and could have been better if we had asked to have more of a say late time instead of leaving all to H Homes officers.
Below are some first visuals where I've tried to keep the important corporate identity of Hackney Homes intact.

Leave your comments below the artwork in "COMMENTS".

See you at the TRA meeting I hope.
As a resident of Beecholme or Casimir Road you're certainly very welcome.
