More about Beecholme

Beecholme is also the first postwar "mixed development" housing scheme in Hackney, with a mixture of houses and flats with the taller block having five storeys and containing one-bedroom and bedsit accommodation. It is featured in Volume 15 of Hackney History and was the site of Beecholme House, the family home of Maj. John André (d. 1780), who was executed as a British spy in the American War of Independence.

Last chance to fight high-rise in Lea Regional Park

UPDATE 26 MAY

The LVRPA have indicated that a High Court JR to overturn the Secretary of State's decision will not go ahead, however a JR of the planning decision might.

Please email the LVRPA executive committee:

Derrick Ashley (Chairman):  derrick.ashley@hertscc.gov.uk

Michael Rye (Vice Chairman): Cllrmichael.rye@enfield.gov.uk

Valerie Metcalfe:  cllr.valerie.metcalfe@essex.gov.uk

Joyce Ryan joyce.ryan@redbridge.gov.uk

Liz Webster: cllr.elizabeth.webster@essex.gov.uk

and ask them to go for a Judicial Review of the Waltham Forest planning decision.

-----------------------------

We have a final, unexpected, chance to fight off the development pictured above
ie. Essex Wharf

It could signal open season for Lea Valley park developments

Waltham Forest Council granted planning permission in January for the controversial seven-storey Essex Wharf tower blocks in the Lee Valley Regional Park (LVRP) aside the River Lea.

The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA), referred the decision to the Secretary of State for reconsideration, but Eric Pickles decided last week intervention would not be justified, ‘because the issues raised do not relate to matters of more than local importance.’

Opponents are deciding whether to apply for a High Court judicial review, which could overturn the Secretary of State’s decision.

Please help by emailing cllr Chris Kennedy and support
him in calling for the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority to continue pushing for the
Judicial Review

Chris Kennedy also sits on the Executive so his position gives us some hope.

The next LVRPA executive committee is on 26 May.
Judicial review would have to be brought within three months, which would fall on 18 June.

Beecholme ETRA meeting 19th May

Enhanced TRA meetings have our Estate Manager, Hackney Homes officers and (most times) councillor Linda Kelly attending.

At this meeting we will be deciding the EIB projects, the summer day trip, the pramsheds and the upcoming 184 walkabout among other things.

(click on the poster above to see it full size)

About the TRA

The TRA is here primarily to represent residents and to ensure the estate is run and looks the way we want (within certain guidelines and rules) so your opinion is important. You can come to any TRA meeting or contact me, David White (TRA Secretary) on 0208 806 3731 or email: david@davidwhitedesign.co.uk

If you live on the Beecholme Estate and have any queries, problems or issues of any kind, your first port of call is our Estate Manager Esther Ojimba (0208 356 6552), however, the TRA is also here to help and can liaise with officers on your behalf if we can't deal with the problem directly.

CCTV
If you have an ASB report and think something might be on CCTV, please note the exact time of the incident or get as close as you can.

It is a real problem looking through 24 hours of video simple because it takes so long. Often the incident is only a few seconds so officers viewing can't fast forward at more than 2x or they risk missing it. That means someone has to sit in front of a screen for 12 hours to review 24hrs of footage, per camera!!

Obviously this isn't a practical proposition  so noting the time of the incident is critical.

I am glad to say we've had very few incidents on the estate over the last 6 months - lets hope it stays that way.

Sculpted bench opening

The official opening of the bench at Beecholme
was a few days ago now and the story has been quite widely taken up.

Adults above L to R: David Mulligan (Hackney Homes EIB officer), Michael Shore (TRA chair), Councillor Linda Kelly and Hackney Homes Resident Participation officer Coralie Francis.

We've actually temporarily cordoned it off again while the turfs on the banking root properly, but it won't be long before it will be open to use permanently.
You can just make out the turfs in the photo above.

London Housing News story

The two new satellite benches still to come (mentioned in the article above) are dependent on the TRA being successful with a recent application for an HCVS GrassRoots Grant - for the benches and continuation of the grounds planting - match funded with our EIB

Follow up story in the Hackney Gazette

The ASA - who watches the watchers

Campaigns like this bring the advertising industry and the ASA into disrepute.
It exemplifies the very worst in both

The shameful "NO2AV" adverts

...in other words:
Vote no or the baby gets it
and be shocked at (made up) figures for (made up) voting machines
with the sub-text, of course, that the NHS matters, but democracy doesn't.

"When I filed my complaint, I was told by the ASA that it can't interfere and that it's a matter for the Electoral Commission. The latter, however, now says it's a matter for the ASA, as it only deals with political parties."
Says Sunny Hundai's (of the Guardian) about his complaint to the ASA

See his full article (with details of the deceit).

The Advertising Standards Authority also say that "for reasons of freedom of speech", it does not have powers to adjudicate on print adverts "where the purpose of the ad is to persuade voters in a local, national or international election or referendum" - ie whether or not an advert is blatantly misleading or deceitful.

This can't be right.
