More about Beecholme

Beecholme is also the first postwar "mixed development" housing scheme in Hackney, with a mixture of houses and flats with the taller block having five storeys and containing one-bedroom and bedsit accommodation. It is featured in Volume 15 of Hackney History and was the site of Beecholme House, the family home of Maj. John André (d. 1780), who was executed as a British spy in the American War of Independence.

It looks like the cut overall for Hackney Council is 14.9% which is around £44m for 2011/12. And they have to find another £17m in 2012/13. They have to cut around £80m over four years. 345 council staff have opted for voluntary redundancy as of last Monday. The assessment of that is due in mid-January. There will be compulsory redundancies.

A New Philanthropy Capital report has made it clear that philanthropy and charities cannot fill the estimated £5 billion, for voluntary and community organisations which will result from the 30 per cent cuts to local authority funding. Perhaps a more powerful way of funding a ‘fair society' would be to create a mechani...sm allowing banks, building societies etc to voluntarily contribute a proportion of their profits toSee more

Their Cuts - Not Ours

Yesterday’s announcement of a fall in the formula grant, which is the main grant councils receive from the government, will hit all of London’s 33 councils but East London ones more than others. The colour-coded map shows the estimated change in revenue spending power for each council in 2011/12. Tower Hamlets and Hac...kney each face a 8.9% cut, the national average is 4.4%. Richmond is 0.61%.See more

This colour-coded map above shows the percentage trimmed from each London council's budget. As the cluster of red segments show, the East End seems to be hit particularly hard.

Their Cuts - Not Ours

Is the coalition using localism as a smokescreen for the frontloaded cuts they are making to council funding? For all their talk of localism, the coalition have dumped the coalition's cuts on local councils so that town halls are losing on average 27 per cent of their funding over the next four years, compared to 11 per cent on average for Whitehall departments.

Next week the coalition will set out its plans for local government reform in the localism and decentralisation bill. Listening to the local government secretary, Eric Pickles, you'd think the last six months have witnessed the dawn of a brave new era of localism. Councils are miraculously freed fro

The vote to increase fees for university students up to £9000 will turn Higher Education into a market. Take a look and see if you can sign this statement opposing the marketisation of education.

This fight is not just about education, it is the latest and sharpest manifestation of the remorseless process of commercial...isation and marketisation of our lives. We need a vision of something different based on mutuality
