More about Beecholme

Beecholme is also the first postwar "mixed development" housing scheme in Hackney, with a mixture of houses and flats with the taller block having five storeys and containing one-bedroom and bedsit accommodation. It is featured in Volume 15 of Hackney History and was the site of Beecholme House, the family home of Maj. John André (d. 1780), who was executed as a British spy in the American War of Independence.

...or even your own.

Local residents, with support from Cllr Linda Kelly (Leabridge ward)
are calling for a pedestrian crossing on Lea Bridge Road
near the entrance of Hillstowe Street
in order to save lives & avoid injury...

...and we need your help to make it happen!

ABOVE: visualization to show approximate position of the proposed crossing: ie. between the bus stop and Hillstowe St.
The crossing may be either a "pelican" or a "zebra" type of crossing.                                       Graphic by David White

It is a busy crossing point where right now residents daily risk life and limb.

A crossing at this site was promised in 2004 - that's how far back the need for a crossing here was recognised.

I'm reliably informed that since then there have been several relatively minor (unreported) injuries to both pedestrians and cyclists and innumerable close calls at this spot.

It has been luck only there hasn't been a fatal incident to date.

Our luck won't last forever...

Although Lea Bridge Road comes under the jurisdiction of Hackney Council, we understand the funding for this crossing can be covered in the LiP scheme, which is funded by TFL.

Dear councillor Demirci, Mr Cunningham, Mr Khan,
I wish to add my voice to those requesting a pedestrian crossing on Lea Bridge Road near Hillstowe St.

It is a busy and currently dangerous crossing point: busy primarily because of the bus stop opposite Hillstowe St entrance and dangerous because by Hillstowe St many drivers have accelerated to well above the speed limit, especially eastbound on Lea Bridge Road.

I believe a pedestrian crossing will save lives and avoid certain injury so urge you
to do all in your power to make it a reality as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
